Well, it depends what you are using the camera for. In my opinion I prefer to use a Canon for high speed shots (sports) and low lighting conditions (great ISO properties). I prefer to use a Nikon for fashion, portraits, architecture and landscape because I feel they create less distortion in these circumstances and maintain straight lines (and this is what I mostly shoot, so naturally I chose to use a Nikon!)

Both camera brands will give you an opportunity to take great pictures. Canon tends to be a bit more expensive but overall it is what you do with the camera - not the camera you have.
